The good thing about being a web editor is that no matter how bad I feel, as long as there's a computer I can get some work done.

Today is one of those days where my body is reminding me to treat it properly. I've been plagued by an upset stomach since last night, the details of which I will spare all of you. Suffice to say that I can't really eat anything excessively oily, fatty or spicy at the moment, so I decided to make something that was easy to eat and healthy at the same time - and perfect for nursing sick people back to health.

The Turkish call this soup Mercimek Corbasi, which means lentil soup. Here's my own take on this dish.

Sad Belly Lentil Soup (makes about 8 servings)

1 large white onion, chopped finely

1 large carrot, peeled and grated

6 garlic cloves, chopped finely

Lentils, 500 gms soaked overnight (or 2 cans if you're in a hurry)

6 mugs of chicken stock (you can substitute this with beef or vegetable stock depending on preference)

A large chunk of quality butter to cook the vegetables

salt, pepper, and cumin to taste

PROCEDURE:

  1. Saute onions, garlic and carrots in a large saucepan for a few minutes, or just until the onions are fragrant and translucent.
  2. Pour in stock and lentils, and add seasoning.
  3. Simmer until lentils are soft.
  4. Put the soup in a blender in batches until smooth.
  5. Garnish with sour cream and a dash of paprika. Best served hot.

Enjoy!
