I started writing when I was nine years old. I knew I wanted a career in writing around the same time - fairy princess and world explorer coming in as back-up careers. I only figured out that I wanted to write about food sometime last year.

For much of the time in between, I struggled to find my own voice, as my peers and contemporaries did with amazing ease (or so I thought). I didn’t feel comfortable among my established poet friends, novelists, or the friends who wrote for fashion magazines because I hadn’t yet found my “sweet spot.” I DID know that I was good at writing about things that made me happy, and one of those things was, and still is food.

Growing up surrounded by a family of excellent cooks on both sides helped me to realize that one of the things I love most in life is worth writing about. Whether it’s something as comforting as my mom’s bacalao or finding a new Korean restaurant in Antipolo (something I should probably write about in the future), I realized that I didn’t need to look very far for inspiration because I could find it in my own kitchen.

“Them Apples” comes from the phrase “How do you like them apples?” that connotes gloating, or a rhetorical question. While I’m not here to brag (well, not ALWAYS), I am here to show you little snippets of all things witty and irreverent, and most of all, delicious.

Now, how do you like THEM apples?
